THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy,
peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness,
faith, Meekness, self-control: against such
thereis no law. (Galatians 5:22-23; KJ2000)
IT’S NOT THE “FRUITS” OF THE SPIRIT. IT’S THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT.
That isn’t just grammar.
It’s theology.
Most Christians read Galatians 5 as though the Spirit produces a basket full of different fruits.
Love. Joy. Peace. Patience. Kindness. Goodness. Faithfulness. Gentleness. Self-control. As if you can have some…
Without the others.
But that isn’t what Paul wrote.
Galatians 5:22 says:
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love,
joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness,
goodness, faith, meekness, temperance…”
Notice something. Paul never says: “The fruits of the Spirit are…” He says: “The fruit…” Singular. One fruit. Not many.
Why does that matter?
Because fruit reveals the nature of the tree it grows from. An apple tree doesn’t produce one apple…
And then pears…Oranges… And peaches. It produces one kind of fruit, bearing all the characteristics of its own nature.
In Scroll language… The Spirit does not grow separate virtues that you collect one at a time.
The Spirit produces one life…And that life naturally expresses itself…
As love. As joy. As peace. As patience. As kindness. As goodness. As faithfulness. As gentleness. As self-control. These are not separate fruits.
They are different expressions of one living reality.
Think of it this way. A grape has: Skin. Flesh. Juice. Seeds. Sweetness. They are different parts… But one fruit. You would never say:
“I have the skin… But not the flesh.” The fruit is whole. So is the Spirit’s work.
This is why it’s dangerous to say: “I have love - I just don’t have patience.”
Or: “I’m joyful - But I struggle with self-control.” Those aren’t independent gifts you pick from a menu.
They are interconnected expressions of one transformed life. Where one is consistently absent, the fruit has not yet fully matured.
Jesus taught the very same principle.
In Matthew 7:17–20 He said:
“Every good tree bringeth forth good fruit…”
Again… Fruit. Singular. Because He wasn’t measuring individual behaviors. He was revealing the nature of the tree.
Healthy trees produce healthy fruit. Healthy hearts produce healthy lives.
The same picture appears in John 15. Jesus said:
“I am the vine,
ye are the branches…
He that abideth in me…
bringeth forth much fruit.” (John 15:5)
He didn’t say: “Much fruits.” Because abiding doesn’t produce a collection of disconnected virtues. It produces one life.
Flowing through the branch.
This changes everything. Because our goal isn’t to chase patience today…
Joy tomorrow… And kindness next week. Our goal is to remain connected to the Source.
The healthier the tree, the healthier the fruit. The deeper the abiding, the more complete the expression.
In Scroll language, the fruit of the Spirit is the visible evidence that the Father’s life has become your life.
Love... Is its affection. Joy... Is its delight. Peace… Is its stability. Patience… Is its endurance. Kindness…
Is its posture. Goodness… Is its integrity. Faithfulness… Is its consistency. Gentleness… Is its strength under control.
Self-control… Is its stewardship.
Different expressions…One fruit. One life. One Spirit.
So stop asking: “Which fruit do I need to work on?” Ask something greater:
“Am I abiding deeply enough for the life of the Spirit to mature within me?”
Because the Spirit doesn’t produce a basket of separate fruits. He produces one beautiful fruit…
Bearing every characteristic of the Father’s nature.
