You'll Find What You're Looking For

And when the people complained, it displeased
the LORD: and the LORD heard it; and his anger
was kindled; and the fire of the LORD burned
among them, and consumed some that were in
the outlying parts of the camp. (Numbers 11:1)

Every day, there is so much to be thankful for, yet human nature is such that it seems like it's always easier to complain than to be thankful. Our default mode is often complaining and grumbling. We sure see this trait in the Israelites as Moses led them out of Egypt. Every time he turned around, they were murmuring and complaining about something, weren't they?

For a good many of us, we have this exact same tendency: complain, complain, complain. Our jobs, our kids, our husbands, our churches - the list of things to complain about is a long one indeed! But do we ever stop to think about how our constant complaints may anger God? Make no mistake about it: a complaining tongue ALWAYS reveals an ungrateful heart!

There is so much to be grateful for in our lives, so why do we focus on things to complain about instead of focusing on things to thank God for? We are instructed not to complain, and to always give thanks to God: "Do all things without murmuring and disputing..." (Philipians 2:14) and "In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

The fact is, we'll find what we're looking for. If we look for reasons to complain, they are all around us. However, if we search for reasons to be grateful instead of complaining, we find they are all around us as well. It all depends on what we choose to focus on. So, what are you looking for today?

Create in me a clean heart, O God;
and renew a right spirit within me.
(Psalms 51:10)
