People Need The Lord

Go you therefore, and teach all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit:
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever
I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you
always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
(Matthew 28:19-20)

We are all born with a deep-seated need for God. We need to know that this crazy thing called life is more than just a series of random, senseless, meaningless events that we have no control over. When life doesn’t go like we planned, when things go wrong, when bad things happen, when we feel helpless, angry, sad, and out of control, we desperately need to know that there is someone bigger than us who can handle these things and help us through it all.

We NEED God! We are all born with a God-sized void in our hearts, a void that only God can fill. God put that need within us for a reason: to cause us to search for Him. It’s sad but true: when we feel like we’ve got it all together, when life is going smoothly and everything is fine in our world, we don’t seek God. Whenever we feel like we are in control, we don't search for the Lord and plead for His help. Why should we, if we were in control? If we could solve our own problems and be in control of our own circumstances, what would we need God for?

But we cannot solve all our own problems, and we cannot be in control of all our circumstances. Life happens to all of us: those unexpected circumstances that rock our world, break our hearts, and blow all our plans to smithereens. That’s why we all need God. That’s when we all seek God. We all have a desperate need to believe there is someone who can help, someone who has the answers. When our lives are spinning out of control, we need someone greater than ourselves to hang onto.

That's what the church is for: to tell people that God is in control of it all. It is up to each of us in the church, the body of Christ, to teach searching people about the One who is truly in control of every thing that happens on this wild roller coaster of life. We need to always be ready to point others to the God who created this world and all that's in it (Gen. 1); who knew us before He formed us in the womb (Isa. 44:24); who has numbered every hair on our heads (Matt. 10:30) and holds the whole world in the palm of His hand.

When we received Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we were born into the family of God. We received a great gift by the grace of God. Now we are called to share that gift with the the rest of the world. This is a command, given by Jesus himself, just before He ascended to heaven to be seated at the right hand of His Father. We call it the Great Commission, our key verse today, and here's what it boils down to: Tell others about Jesus! That's the greatest need for everyone - People need the Lord! What can we do today to tell someone about Jesus?

Everyday they pass me by,
I can see it in their eyes.
Empty people filled with care,
Headed who knows where?

On they go through private pain,
Living fear to fear.
Laughter hides their silent cries,
Only Jesus hears.

People need the Lord, people need the Lord.
At the end of broken dreams, He's the open door.
People need the Lord, people need the Lord.
When will we realize, people need the Lord?

We are called to take His light
To a world where wrong seems right.
What could be too great a cost
For sharing Life with one who's lost?

Through His love our hearts can feel
All the grief they bear.
They must hear the Words of Life
Only we can share.

People need the Lord, people need the Lord
At the end of broken dreams, He's the open door.
People need the Lord, people need the Lord.
When will we realize that we must give our lives,
For peo-ple need the Lord.
People need the Lord.
