In remembrance of those we love
who have gone before us, but
will never be forgotten, for the
memory lives on within our hearts.


The tradition of lighting candles can be traced back to
Exodus, where the lamps in the Temple of the Lord were to
be kept burning continually, day and night. (Ex. 27:20-21)


Candles may be lit as an accompaniment to prayer. They can
serve to remind us that Jesus is the Light of the World. (John 8:12)
They can be a reminder to us to put our trust in the Light so that
we may become sons of Light. (John 12:36). They can remind
us to let our light so shine before men, that they may see our good
works, and glorify our Father which is in heaven. (Matt. 5:16)


However, we need to be very clear: candles do not accompany
our prayers to heaven. They cannot add anything to make our
prayers more powerful or effective. And lighting candles for the
souls of those who have passed away will not assist them in any
manner whatsoever. Candles have no spiritual or mystical or
magical powers, and cannot in any way make our prayers any
more acceptable to God or make atonement for our own souls,
or those of anyone else. They have no power to "light the way",
nor do they indicate the presence of any supernatural power or deity.
They are soothing and relaxing, however, and are used here in that
manner only, and to remind us of the one true Light of the World,
Jesus.
